BACKSLIDING

A). MEANING OF:
Is turning away from the path of Christ into sin. A backslider is one time faithful child of God who has stopped the fellowship with Christ by living in a sinful lifestyle. Hos 11:7, John 6:60-66

B). CAUSES OF BACKSLIDING:
What results one into backsliding.
1. Absence of spiritual leaders - Exo 32
2. Evil associations - 1 Cor 15:33-34
3. Worldly success - 1 Tim 6:6-10
4. Shallowness in the word of God - Lk 8:13
5. Nothing to do - Elders should keep members busy - Lk 12:42-48
6. Love for the world - 2 Tim 4:10
7. Lack of interest in the word of God - 1 Cor 3:1-2, 1 Pet 2:1-2, Heb 5:12-14, 12:5

8. Mixed marriages - Neh 13:23-27, 1 Kings 11:1-6. Refer Gen 26:34-35; 27:46; 28:1-9

C). DANGERS OF BACKSLIDING:
1. Religious indifferent (the love grow cold) - Mat 24:12
2. Unfit for the kingdom of God - Lk 9:62
3. Loss of spiritual enthusiasm - Rev 2:4
4. You lose your personal relationship with the Lord - 1 John 1:6
5. The peace, joy and assurance of God's presence and His answers to your prayers are cut - Ps 66:18
6. It results in spiritual sickness and death - 1 Cor 11:30
7. We miss our heavenly rewards at judgement - 1 Cor 3:15, 2 John 8
8. It ruins your testimony and witness and puts ones to public ridicule - Lk 14:28-32
9. Their later end is worse than before - 2 Pet 2:20-22, Lk 11:24-26
10. Divine displeasure - Heb 10:38

D). THE CURE OF BACKSLIDING:
1. King David - 2 Sam 12
He confessed and repented - Ps  32:1-5; 40:1-8; 51:1-19

2. King Hezekiah - 2 Chron  32:25-26

3. WHAT MUST WE DO: 
Human part:
i. Conviction - Mat 26:75
ii. Confess - 1 John 1:9
iii. Repentance - Ezk 18:30-32, Rev 2:5,16; 3:3,19

God's part:
A). Forgiveness - 1 Sam 12:13, 1 John 1:9
i. Receives God's judicial forgiveness - (the death penalty is cancelled).
ii. Receives God's parental forgiveness -(relationships, fellowships are restored)

B). Restoration - Lk 15:22-24

E). THE CHURCH AND INDIVIDUALS:
i. Pray and correct them - Jam 5:16-20
ii. Restore the backslider - Gal 6:1-2
iii. Show love to them - 2 Cor 2:6
