[By Robert Arthur] A Bible Class Tracts No. 2 Introduction Discipleship is the biblical concept of modelling, learning and mentoring Christ Jesus. In other words it is the process of learning to become like Christ Jesus. 1 Cor 11:1 The Greek word disciple “mathetis” means “one who engages in learning through instructions from someone who has reputation or particular set of views.” And the Latin comes from the word “discipulus” which also means “a learner or student.” In the ancient biblical world the word disciple was mainly applied to someone who imitated both the life, views and teachings of his master. Sometimes applied to the followers of Moses. Jn 9:28, John the Baptist. Mt 9:14, the Pharisees. Mt 22:16. But mostly to the followers of Christ Jesus. Mt 5:1, Mk 7:17 Discipleship involves a call to fully counting the cost, carrying one’s cross and surrounding one’s self to the Lord. Lk 9:23; 14:28-32.
